Many thanks for the info from the 1881 census.

I think he turns up as a reasonable match on the 1871 1891 and 1901 Census also ....

BUT there seem to be 3 different wives along the way which is confusing me as, of course, without a maiden name it is not possible for me to track any further back - I was hoping to be able to look up marriage records here in the Swansea Archives but now realise that is not possible... back to the drawing board....
