Re: Thomas Corkhill/Corkill - Coastguard

Hi Betty, great to see your message - despite it being such a common name, there dont seem to be too many people researching Corkill!

I dont know if my old messages are still around to view but basically I have a John Corkill/Corkell (Cornish spelling)/Kalkhill (name on his marriage certificate) who married in Penzance in 1802. I know there to be a link between the Cornish Corkells and the IOM Corkills and its probably this John, but I can find out nothing about him despite years of trying.

Like your Evan Corkill, he too was "a mariner" and I guess this doesnt help when trying to track down details of him. He had several children, two sons of which went on to be responsible for several generations of the family in Penzance all through the 1800s. Have you come across Corkills in Cornwall or is it just Liverpool in the UK?

If youve anything that can help when youve unpacked your boxes (hows settling in going?) would be very grateful. How did you get on with tracing a "mariner"? I do wonder if my John kept going to sea (or at least away from Penzance) - he never seems to be at home for the census dates! He's one big puzzle, and I am stuck until I can find out more about him!

I have come across Liverpool Corkills in passing - but it was a John Corkill who was a master shipbuilder there in the early part of the 1800s (before you would be interested in Liverpool Corkills?). Let me know if you would like me to look up further details.

Those webs sites you mentioned - do you have to be signed up with them to get any info?

Thanks again, Alison
