Re: Thomas Corkhill/Corkill - Coastguard

Hi Alison. I haven't visited this web site in a very long time. So, I haven't kept up with postings.

My ancestor was Evan CORKILL / CORKHILL who was born on the IOM in 1827. He was one of the oldest of ten children of John and Esther CORKILL of the IOM.

During my 4+ years of research on this name (and the LEWIS name), I have found out there were many CORKILL's (all spellings) on the IOM going back possibly to the early 1700's.

Evan CORKILL married in Liverpool, England, around 1858, and then moved there. I believe he married Elizabeth QUAYLE, but I'm not sure of that surname and whether or not she was also from the IOM.

Evan was reported to have been a Mariner, but he might have given up that occupation after his wife's death around 1872.

(Their 5 children went to live in the Liverpool Sheltering Homes in 1873, and were "shipped to Canada" as "British Home Children" in 1874.)

The oldest was Mary Elizabeth CORKILL / CORKILL, and she would become my father's grandmother.

...
I have collected lots of CORKILL information, but I'm sorry I can't offer it right now. We moved to a new home 3 weeks ago, and my boxes ... of genealogy papers are still taped up.
