William Barrie died IOM 1873

Hello Fellow Researchers: I posted previously regarding William Barrie who lived at The Cliffs, Cresent, Douglas--but now I have a question regarding a possible death certificate. A direct ancestor of William Barrie's just visited IOM and was told that there would have not been a death certificate unless there was a post mortem.

Does anyone have any information as to why there wouldn't have been a death registry and certification? This seems rather odd to me and was wondering if any one could explain this or if anyone has come up against this as well in their own research.

Additionally, the local Douglas newspaper was searched for six months after William Barrie's death and there was no mention--no obituary. Again, perhaps this is normal there but strikes me as being odd as I feel certain that William Barrie was a man that was a retired RN Captain and was a man of some wealth.

Would appreciate any suggestions, ideas, thoughts, or anyone else's experiences in looking for similar information with the same type of results.. Thank you
