Joyce: Thanks for the response. I came to the same conclusion, that the most likely parentage for our Daniel was John Garrett and Anne Radcliffe, as you did some six years back. I considered a few more possibilities but ruled them out. What I have been hoping for is a definitive link such as a will but have not had the time to track that down. I had hoped also to see perhaps one of John and Ann's other children show up as a sponsor at the baptism of one of Daniel and Catherine's children, but have not found such a link. I, too, have Ellen's marriage certificate and noted that Daniel's occupation is listed as "mason". There is no information on my great grandmother's marriage certificate as to her father's occupation. "Licensed Victualler" appears on her death certificate for her father's occupation. The informant was her husband, Phillip Kelly. I have been unable to verify that designation. Daniel Garrett does not appear in any of the early IOM directories nor does he appear in either the 1841 or 1851 censuses. He is dead, as is Catherine, by 1853 when the three girls emigrate to NSW.
Have you tracked back the Garrett line or had any luck with the Costain line. If you would like to continue to discuss the Garretts off line you may contact me at dkirkham at snet.net using of course the "@".
