Manx Fishing Boats

This past spring there was a lively discussion on this subject that reminded me that I am interested in knowing more about three fishing boats out of Peel that seem to be associated with my family. (There is also a schooner out of Whitehaven that has a somewhat romantic connection,if true, with my great grandparents): The first two are "Vanguard" and "Skylark". My GGgrandfather Thomas Cashin 1804-1874 had them built for his use. They may be similar to the four built for Caesar Carris in 1835. (Cashin-Carris seem closely connected in early accounts if not of the same family.) Family story is that one was wrecked off the Calf of Man. Which one? Does anyone have more information about these two boats? "Fleetwing" was a 'nickie' built for or purchaed by my Ggandfather, William Cashen 1838-1912, late Custodian of the Castle at Peel and former Assistant Harbor Master. I understand she was of Cornish design and highly regarded by him for use in the herring trade. Does anyone know her story and fate? "Western Trade" was a schooner out of Whitehaven. William Cashen was apprenticed to the Master by his father, the above mentionrd Thomas Cashin, as a young boy, perhaps as early as 1840, and sailed on her to the far east and other exotic ports of call. He seems to have prefected his story telling ability on these voyages. The family memory is that the "Western Trader"was wrecked off Peel sometime before 1864. She had sought shelter from a southeast gale in Peel Bay and when the wind changed she broke anchor and was driven ashore at Traie-Foyeg and broke up at the mouth of the creek. All aboard were said to have been rescued. James Morrison, the Harbor Master and George Greggor, a Peel fisherman carried my Ggrandfather to the home of Henry Cowell where he was nursed back to health by the daughter Susanah Cowell. William and Susanah later married(02Oct1864) The romantic begining of my branch of the Cashin family. Did Greatgrandfather shade the Truth? It sounds like a chapter of one of his books of Manx Folklore or poetry. Can anyone tell me the story of the fate of the "Western Trader" and William Cashins part in it? Thank you for any more light that folks can give concerning these four boats, Bob
