KINNISH / KENNISH
In Response To: Re: kinnish ()

Bear in mind that the name was often recorded as "Kennish" - perhaps more often than Kinnish - so descendants may be called Kennish today.
Also, in the 1800s when your ancestor left Maughold, there were several Kinnish / Kennish families living there. To find out whether or not they were related to your William K, you would need to trace them all back, so the name alone will not help you with current relationships.
His parents are clear: Robert Kinnish/Kennish and Jane Callow. Siblings from baptisms are slightly confusing because Jane is recorded with three different similar-sounding surnames - presumably because she came from Lonan and was unknown to the Maughold parish clerk. However the census returns show the children as William b.1819 [the eldest], Evan b.1825, James b.1828, John b.1831, Mary b.1833, Jane b.1836.

Most censuses give their farm as 13-15 acres at Crow Creen, Maughold. Robert Kinnish was buried aged 66, residence Crow Creen, on Jan.1 1862. Jane was in the 1871 Lonan census:
1871, Lonan, district 1, schedule 104, Ballaragh
James Caley, head, married, 40, miner & farmer of 9 acres, Lonan
Mary, wife, married, 37, Maughold
Thomas, son, 12, scholar, Lonan
Maria, daughter, 10, scholar, Lonan
James, son, 7, scholar, Lonan
Margaret Ann, daughter, 4, Lonan
Robert, son, 1, Lonan
Jane Kennish, mother in law, widow, 79, visitor, Maughold.

She was buried in Lonan: Jane KINNISH, aged 79, residence The Cairn, buried 17 Mar 1872.

Apparently the Crow Creen farm was inherited by Evan, the next son in line after William left.

Evan KINNISH married Margaret KISSACK in Braddan 14 Feb.1861 [IGI].
Their son Robert Evan b.1865, married 1 Jan. 1898:
Robert Evan KENNISH 32 Bachelor Grocer, Ramsey [father] Evan Kennish, Farmer
Jane WARD 26 Spinster Ramsey [father] William Ward (dec).

Robert Evan's daughter's marriage:
24 Apr 1923 John Lucas CALLISTER 25 Bachelor Farmer Croit Jack, Maughold [father] John Callister (dec), Farmer
Winifred Margaret KENNISH 23 Spinster Lhag Vollagh, Maughold [father] Robert Evan Kennish, Gentleman.

So it looks as though Robert Evan's family had moved to Lhag Vollagh. Evan is still in directories at Crowcreen in 1889 and 1894.
Evan KENNISH was buried aged 84, of Crow Creen, Maughold, on 20 Jul 1909.
Robert Evan KENNISH was buried aged 71, of Lhag Vollagh, Maughold, on 28 Dec 1935.

Frances Coakley's website says that Crow Creen is "along-side of Ballasloe", which is next to the A15, south of Ramsey. You shouldn't have any difficulty finding it, or people who knew of Evan K. or Evan Robert K.
I think that Lhag Vollagh or Lag Vollagh is near Cornaa Mill which is quite close if so, but someone local will know.

Please give me your email address if you would like me to send you the full records of the above.
