Hello Cousin, I have some interesting information for you.
William Kelly was born 1852 and died 30 Apl 1917, he was the son of John Kelly who was a labourer and lived in Crosby. William also had a sister, Frances who married Quine Cowin, I believe they are buried in Marown churchyard. William Kelly, a tailor, married Louisa Crellin of Ballahutchin, on 11th September 1875 she was the daughter of John Crellin who was a fisherman. She died on 27th Oct 1922. They had, to my knowledge, 10 children as follows:
Emily married Jack Nelson.
Edward married Florence Faragher.
John William married Hannah ?
Lucy married William Belcher.
Edith Annie married John Shimmin
Arthur died at 9 years old.
Jane Braid died at 7 years old
Frances Ada married William Harold Quaye
(My Grandarents)
Alfred filled in action in France in 1915 aged 23
Elizabeth.
Jane Braid and Arthur are buried in the same grave as their parents at Marown, Alfred's name is also on the headstone but I imagine his body would not have been returned from France. Their home is shown as Slieau Chairn which is a small cottage on the hillside above the Braaid, it was the house my father was born in an still stands although I don't know if it is occupied.
The newspapers of the day reported that during the great storm of 1894 at 3 o'clock on Saturday morning (no date) that the entire roof was blown off the house of Mr Kelly, tailor, of the Braaid. The house stood at the corner of the road leading to Marown Old Church. The family had barely fled from the unroofed dwelling when the gable end tumbled inwards. I recall my father telling me this story, the house is no longer there as the roadway was widened many years ago and the ruins were removed, I also remember telling me that his grandmother was blind.
I inherited the family photographs when my Grandfather died and there are photos of the "Canadian" branch, unfortunately I am unable to identify all the faces. I know that my grandmother used to write to several Aunts in Canada.
The Braaid Methodist Chapel stood at the crossroads but fell into disuse and was demolished to provide better vision at the road junction. I was often there and also at the Braaid YMC for a concert or a Manx Tay.
I hope that this information is of use to you.
