I went to the Scottish Registry Office to have a look.
The 'free surname search' on the General Register Office for Scotland's site, www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, returns only two instances on the name Kayll. Using the year range to narrow the search turns up one birth or christening in 1667, and one death in 1926. Kayl returns no results.
The fee to look at the actual search results is quite reasonable and there are many records on line. The old parish records are usually not there for viewing but must be ordered. These are the records available to search:
Search Censuses (Census Index for 1881)
Search Censuses (Census Indexes for 1891, 1901)
Search Old Parish Record Births (OPR Index Births & Christenings (1553-1854))
Search Statutory Births (Statutory Register Index Births (1855-1902))
Search Old Parish Record Marriages (OPR Index Marriages (1553-1854))
Search Statutory Marriages (Statutory Register Index Marriages (1855-1927))
Search Statutory Deaths (Statutory Register Index Deaths (1855-1952))
Search All Statutory Records
Search All Old Parish Records
If you have Scottish connections, this is a wonderland, but you need to be a careful searcher to maximize results. They store all your searches for you so you can refer to them later and keep your 'viewed images' available as well. This is one of my favorite places, could you tell?
