Before 1870 the majority of people could not read and write and names in parish records, land deals and censuses etc tended to vary as each scribe took down a phonetic interpretation of what was heard - it is thus likely that these names equate to similar sounding surnames begining in C, Q or K and may well be standardised now in the Manx name Karran - try adding a message to the Karran bulletin boards to see if anyone can help with the specific names.
I was thinking about your sources - if you have old Manx documents relating to St Johns, it may be they are unique and I am sure Frances would be very grateful to add any such info to her web site to help other people.
Try checking Brian Lawson's website too (you can access it from Frances's).
The local brew is Bushey's, or for the hard stuff Manx Spirit (an island version of whiskey) - of course the best liquid refreshment was Manx water, but I haven't seen any bottles of this recently.
