Hi Bernadette It seems that the Arras sector -from Jan. 1916 to when the 55th Division left this sector in July 1916 for the Somme. Was fairly quiet -on saying this there was alway's great danger from sniper fire( a company sergeant major from my fathers regiment the 4th Kings Own was killed by a sniper in April 1916 and one Officer and three ORs wounded at a later date after a trench raid mishap)To quote one source - in the six months prior to the Battle of the Somme the B E F lost over 1oo,ooo men in minor actions on the Western Front - A lot of casualties occured due to the policy of keeping up an active front - by agressive patrolling and trench raiding. It appears your relative lost his life in one of the minor actions that claimed so many lives . Im pleased you have the answer to the loss of your relative.Regards John Callow
