Re: Kewley
In Response To: Re: Kewley ()

In relation to Margret Elizabeth Aspell i have come across a slightly confusing piece of information.

We have a Margret Jane Aspell born 9 January 1857 who was definately the daughter of James Aspell (the butcher) and his second wife Jane Heard Cain.

I have however come across several pieces of information that would suggest either Margret Elizabeth Aspell and Margret Jane Aspell could well have been the same person or that one of them died v.v.young and the next daughter was also called Margret.

The names Jane and Elizabeth run throughout the Aspell family as does the attatchemtn to the Kewley family.

James Aspells second wife was named Jane whilst his mother and sister were named Elizabeth

James Aspells first wife was Mary Ann Kewley b. 1823 d. 1851 (daughter of Robert Kewley b 1798 d. 1841 and Mary Quirk b. 1781 d. 1856).

James Aspell, Mary Kewley/Aspell, Robert Kewley, Mary Quirk/Kewley and Robert Aspell are buried in plots 110 and 111 of Kirk Braddan old churchyard, along with various other Aspells in plot 699, 700, 1245N, 2979, 4175 NA, 4718 NA, 5266.

In response to Brian even though the 1961 census lists James and his 2nd wife Jane the son of seven was infact called James Walter Aspell b. 13 August 1854 (which correctly makes him 7 in the census, however the daughter Margret Elizabeth aged 2 would again fit in as being Margret jane Aspell b. 9 january 1859 (which would also make her 2).

Confusing eh!!!!

In relation to the Aspell butchers buisness i believe that the last Aspell butcher was a Ronald Aspell who's daughter may have turned it into a haberdashery at some stage.

Five generations of Aspells were butchers from 1820's until late 1960/70's in locations at Wellington Street, Duke Street, Castletown Road (new to me) and Arboury Road

hope it's all of some use
