Someone said that Dollough is pronounced 'dolly' that may be today, but does anyone know how it was pronounced 400 years ago?
I wonder why 'laugh' is pronounced 'laff' but 'lough' is pronounced 'ly/lee'. Also, I wonder if pronouncing it dolly is really a colloquealism - as in Johnny for jonathan or Danny for Daniel - if you know what I mean! how would one pronounce 'lough' and 'laugh' without the Dol in front of it?
Also, Could someone clarify why Ballaugh is pronounce with an 'laff' sound at the end. For clarification could someone explain why the home site of a family named Radcliffe from Ballaugh says laugh is pronounce 'laff'. Thanks
