In Frances's excellent Manx Notebook, I found the following :-
"....locative form of keyll, ‘a wood.’ "
I'm interested to find if anyone can say how keyll would be pronounced.
The reason for my interest is a family name Kayll, how its spelling has changed over time, and where it originated. This has been reinforced by just finding that a distant family branch pronounces the name as Kyle, as against Kale.
I'm wondering if the original, possibly Scottish, pronunciation could have been transcribed by the Manx as Keyll. On the family's later migration to Liverpool, several more variants have been found, including a definite Coyle!
