Hi Stan ref your interest in the village of Leece situated in Furness. I spent
a good part of my life in the area -my G/Parents both Manx born-were situated
at Dalton -in- Furness then in .Lancs now in Cumbria.--Furness in the Domesday
Book was known as Hougan(the nearest the Norman surveyers could get to the
Celtic word for the area 'Gwaun' -meaning 'the moorland.Leece is situated a few miles S-S-E of Dalton-in Furness. in the D/D/Book it is shown as LIES and is
described as six carucates in the Manor of Hougan held by Earl Tostig the name may be derived from the words LE and IS meaning a lower place perhaps describing
it's location-this info from Bulmers History and Directory of Furness & Cartmel
circa-1900 However 'Place Names of Cumbria'1998 gives Leece as'Glades in sparse woods' from the plural of 'leah'(OE)hoping this info is of use to you regards John Callow.
