It would appear that James Briggs was never transported; see below entry from the newspaper "Manks Advertiser, Tuesday, March 14, 1837; Page: 7" -
James Briggs, Peter Cubbon , and Joseph Black were p laced at the bar , charged with having stolen a quantity of cordage from the sloop Stag, of Whitehaven, l ying in Douglas harbour. This case we reported as heard before a iury of enquiry in Douglas. His Honour Deem ster Christian, in charging the jury spoke emphatically as to the mischief" committed by those shops, wherein stolen property could be purchased with impunity—Verdict—Guilty. Sentence—transportation for seven years. [We understand that b y the lenity of the law, these juvenile prisoners will not be sent beyond the seas , but will be put as apprentices to useful trades under strict disci p line.]
