Yes, when writing these notes here, I was wondering the same thing. The Thomas Gelling that I'm floating as a good possibility is also missing and then reappears in the IOM in 1881. Could he have brought the family back after he retired from the Royal Navy? There's a good workable story here but wobbly when it come to proving it.
