Deeds of Settlement often included that all parties binding themselves to a penalty of some sort. I presume the penalty was paid to the offended party, but there is some indication that part went to the Church or Courts. Was there some particular rules say in the year 1800? I have one occasion where the penalty was for £10,000 pounds that seemed a lot for a Jurby farmer of the time. Any info on it?
