Re: Harrisons
In Response To: Harrisons ()

The earliest Harrison will in Rushen is that of John Harrison - a quick summary (hand somewhat difficult to read in parts) - dated 31 Jul 1651;ch Wm(eldest son), John, Anne + Elizabeth (last 3 exors) ;names Thomas Norris; servant Wm Costeene; mentions parcel of purchased land called Ardevolley... ;large inventory
- no mention of any wife - looked at Lib vas and no land transfers but 1652 + 3 saw no courts as Earl of Derby had been beheaded and the Parliamentary forces took over Island - Ardvolley is an Abbey farm in Malew - I had started some time ago on transcribing Abbey property transfers from Lib Monastarum(covers Abbey land) but still very incomplete - however I couldn't find any note of such a purchase or transfer to these exors
The first appearance of a Harrison land owner in Rushen is in 1659 for a parcel of intacks + a cottage - the sd John Harrison is entered by deede of gift from the sd Henry Taylor and with the consent of his aunt (wife of the said Henry) in court acknowledginge that the sd Jo Harrison hath the sole propriety

I wonder if this is the same John son of John Harrison who d 1651 having retired in widowhood to live with sister?

Note also that the name Harrison might well be an anglicisation of the Irish MacHenry (look at www.manxnotebook.com/manxnb/v11p113.htm where suggested that same name went to Kinry in northern parishes (less 'english) than Malew where Harrison is v common)
