Re: Lace family
In Response To: Re: Lace family ()

Hi John and Eric

I was looking at your Monmouth Thomas Lace mystery yesterday, John, and I made some notes but hadn’t found anything conclusive so decided not to send a reply to your message.

Now, having seen Eric’s message today, I might as well show my bit of research.

Like Eric, the candidate I like best for your Thomas Lace is Eric’s #1 (25 June 1804 Andreas, son of Thos Lace and Margt Callister) based on the ages TL gave at census time in 1841, 1851 and 1861, and the age that was given at his death (do you have his death cert to know who registered it ?)

Below are the notes I made yesterday.

Is this the right marriage ?
*****

Name Thomas Lace
Event Type Marriage
Event Date 26 Jun 1827
Event Place Dingestow, Monmouthshire, Wales
Spouse's Name Ann Jones

Dingestow isn’t far from the birthplace given in 1851 by Thomas Lace’s wife ---Welsh Newton, Herefordshire.

Since your Thomas Lace gave his age as 30 in 1841, 46 in 1851, 59 in 1861 and was 80 at death in 1880, I’ve been looking at possible baptisms:

1) bap 25 Jun 1804 Andreas, Thos Lace/Mgt Callister
2) bap 9 May 1798 Bride, Wm Lace/Ann Cowle

The second one is in lots of online trees as having married someone else, so I’ve looked at siblings of the first one (to see if any moved over to Monmouthshire, or had Welsh cousins visiting in later censuses).

To parents Thos Lace and Mgt Callister I found 4 children baptised in Andreas---Jane b 1802, Thos 1804, Esther 1808, Ann 1810.

There was also a John Lace bap 1806 Marown to Thos Lace and Mgt Collister. This might be the John Lace, tailor, who married Elinor Quilliam in Patrick in 1839---he gave his father’s details as Thos Lace, labourer.

Jane b 1802 might be the Jane Lace who married Wm Christory in 1820 Andreas (Wm C “of Jurby” and Jane Lace “of this parish”) William died in 1823 and then widow Jane married Wm Callister in 1830.

1841
Jurby

Ancestry’s transcription:
Name Age
Jane Callister 40
Jane Callister 15
James Callister 8
Margret Callister 5

note—Jane age 15 probably Jane Ann Christry bap 7 Jan 1827 Jurby, illegit daughter of Jane Christry.

Janes’s daughter, Jane Christory b 1826, married Daniel Quine, shoemaker.

Jane’s daughter, Margaret Callister b 1836, married Thomas Cleator.

Possible marriage for Ann Lace b 1810, dau of Thos Lace and Mgt Callister:

Name Thomas Kneen
Event Type Marriage
Event Date 30 Nov 1828
Event Place Andreas, Isle of Man
Gender Male
Spouse's Name Ann Lace
Spouse's Gender Female

*******
Possible entry for Ann Kneen nee Lace b 1810:

1841
Bride

Ancestry’s transcription:

Name Age
Thos Knun 35
Anne Knun 30
Thos Knun 12
Wm Knun 7
John Knun 5
Jane Knun 1

notes:
Knun should be Kneen
TK 35 ag lab

I suspect that some of this Kneen family went to America before the 1851 census.

At this point, I ran out of steam.

One advantage of putting it on this forum is that someone might recognise these families and be able to say from his/her research that #1 Thos Lace b 1804 s/o Thos Lace and Mgt Callister wasn’t the one who moved to Monmouth.
