Thank you both Frances and Col for your responses. The reason I ask is that my daughter recently went to Caleys shop/post office to ask if it stood on the site of the original one but they thought not. In the 1871 census my ancestor Thomas and his wife Ann Eliza Cretney were listed as living next door to the grocer and his family and in the 1881 census, next to the post office owner - same surname. My daughter found Ann Eliza's grave in the old Lezayre churchyard and was curious to know the rough whereabouts the Cretney's cottage might have stood and I thought finding the site of the old shop/post office was the best we could do.
Thanks for your suggestions!
Regards to all,
Andrea Bates nee Cretney
