Naming a second child the same as one still alive was very common in Scotland. I have been told (not sure if it is true) that if the first one was poorly and maybe not expected to live , then as second child could be named the same , particularly if the child was named after a grandparent.
Obvious confusion if they both lived. My wife's Campbell family arrived in Sydney from Scotland with two children named Ewen.
If the Speeds were Scottish , it may explain.
