Thanks for all this information. I guess Thomas Kneale is going to remain mysterious for now. I was hoping someone out there might know where he came from, and I wondered whether my GG-grandfather had known him in the IOM and/or he was connected through this loose link that I think I have found with a Kneale family from Michael.

As it happens, I've not had much success with the ship passenger lists for my GG-grandfather and his family - although I've found them on later voyages from Australia to NZ or the UK, they don't show up for their original immigration voyages in 1853 and 1854 (he came first, then went back and got the family, and I know which ships they came on).
