Hi Barry
Yes , as Frances pointed out he would not have been on a farm in the middle of Douglas the capital. I have only been on the Island once , my wife's grandparents were born on the IOM. I live in Sydney, Australia.
Had a look for Lily's birth, and did find it , Isabella Louisa in Douglas , May 3, 1889. And found three more children:
John, Kirk Rushen , April 23, 1886
Phillip Allan , Douglas September 10, 1896
And a mystery , on the IGI the christening is given as November 8 , 1882 William. Death December 30 , 1882. This is wrong , on Brian Lawsons BDM's :
William Henry born July 27, 1881. Lawsons death December 1882 is a William Thomas , and the following Census 1891 confirms he did not die in 1882. They are at Barrack Street , Conchan ( Douglas ?) :
Edward Head 40
Anne Wife 30
William Son 9
John Son 5
Lily Daughter 2
All Born IOM
Maybe could not get William Baptised because he was conceived out of wedlock ? Frances could perhaps answer that question.
William may be a boarder on 1901 census at Follett St, Poplar , London , aged 20 , Born IOM.
The other thing I found was that there were more than six more Edward Clague's having children with different wives in the same period.
Edward, Richard and Frances were not common names on the IOM till the late 1800's. My wife's grandfather was Edward born 1889 , but the first one in 400 years in any of her Manx Families.
There is a line of Edward Clague's going back to the early 1700's on the IOM.
Cheers
David
