Thankyou Peter, that clarifies it for me - I had not heard that term before. I suppose his job was to work and live with the horses.
In Brian Lawson's census Index for that year, his wife Sarah Jane (Corrin) MASON is listed with their three small children as being in Douglas - not sure who they were with. Not an easy life for a family those days.
