Hi Robyn,
I think that the Garrets you may be interested in form a "branch" of my sister-in-law's family, but there seems to be a problem re John James Garrett / Elizabeth Ann Watterson. I have John James as being b.1852 s/o William Garrett / Ann (Nancy) Redpath. The IGI gives his age at marriage as 24 in 1882 [hence b.1858] but in the 1901 census returns he was aged 49 yrs and born in Braddan. He died in 1916 aged 63yrs.
The John James Garrett who was with his Shimmin grandparents in 1861 at Rhenny House in German remained at that address through 1871 and 1881, when he was given as the 23-yr old nephew of John Shimmin [son & heir of Hugh]. Also working there as a General Domestic Servant in 1881 was Annie R Looney [19]. A John James Garrett married Annie Rubina Looney in 1890. In subsequent census returns his age was consistent with b.1858, and his birthplace was "German". He died in Douglas in 1936 aged 78yrs, buried with Anne Robina d.1952 aged 90yrs in Douglas Borough Cemetery Grave NP298.
What needs to be verified is the marriage record of John James Garrett + Elizabeth Ann Watterson Sep 17 1882 Kirk German. I suspect that "24" given in the IGI has been mis-transcribed and should be "29". I will check this when I next visit the IoM in September.
