Hello
I have come across William Henry Quilliam during research on a friend's family tree. I am more than a bit confused, but it is such a fascinating subject. I have some other information relating to William. He was the son of Robert Quilliam and Harriet Burrows (Harriet comes from the family branch that I was looking at). I have traced him through the Censuses to 1901 where he is shown as Solicitor Vice Consul for Persia. His son, Robert Quilliam, is shown as Chancillier and Acting Vice Consul.
I later came across the entries for the children of his son William H Billal Quilliam whose mother was a Kerruish before marriage, which matches in with a previous entry relating to Bill Kerruish. I was flustered that I couldn't find any further records relating to that part of the family and had a feeling that they may have changed their name and disassociated themselves - which appears to have been the case.
The tale of William taking the name of Quilliam from a headstone does not stack up with the entries showing his life via the Censuses and other things, including an Article of Clerkship to Solicitors which he took in 1873.
His mother, Harriet (Burrows) Quilliam, has a very ebullient obituary at www.masud.co.uk/ISLAM/bmh/BMH-Harriet_Quilliam.htm.
I have come to the conclusion that William b1856 was the right person.
Is there any further information on him and his family which has come to light since this thread was first submitted?
(This is pure nosiness on my part, by the way. It is an unusual set of circumstances to come across someone this interesting. My friend and the rest of the family appear to have stuck to the Methodist way - Harriet's father was Dr John Bamford Burrows, a prominent Liverpool Surgeon/GP/Methodist, and there have been other Methodist Ministers through the generations. I hope that she is going to be quite fascinated by this distant branch of the family!)
