A while back there was an inquiry re: an IOMFHS back journal. Mine are in storage so my friend, Shirley H, in Utah graciously offered to look up the article. It is as follows:
There is a photo of each on page 96
My great great grandmother Isabella Cannell was born at Douglas on 4th September 1808 the daughter of James Cannell and Esther Christian who were married at Braddan on 7th June 1807. Isabella met and married Charles Moore who was according to his attestment papers born in County Leitrim Ireland circa 1799.
Charles was confirmed at Colchester Essex in 1813.
Place and date of their marriage is unknown as it is recorded only as England on any subsequent certificates, likewise Charles parentage is so far unknown, it is thought his father was also in the British Army.
Charles joined the British Army which led him to France, West Indies, Portugal, Australia and East Indies. He was discharged to the Isle of Man in June 1840, taking with them their children Charles, Sarah, and Robert. Two further children were born at Douglas - Albert Sydney baptised 23 May 1842 and Henry William baptised 28 March 1844.
Charles and Isabella stayed on Isle of Man until 1847 during which time Charles was Publican at Ivy Cottage St Annes Castletown. The British Army called for Army Pensioners as Volunteers to come to New Zealand for deference purposes in return for a cottage and an acre of land. The family sailed from Gravesend to New Zealand in April 1847.
Family sources have passed down a story that Isabella's parents were devasted that she was going to live so far away and it is believed that in their will she was left an amount of money on the proviso that the family return to the Island to live which they never did.
The photographs are of painting of Charles Moore and Isabella Cannell perhaps one of your readers will know something of the family. I believe Isabella Cannell had siblings: Margaret Cannell born 17 November 1811, Robert Cannell born 18 December 1814 and Ann Elizabeth Cannell born 31 Jan 1819 and there quite possibly are others. I believe their father James Cannell's parents to be Robert Cannell and Margaret Callister who were married on 2 May 1778 at Malew with siblings Thomas bapt 9 March 1783 at Malew and William bapt 27 May 1792 at Braddan.
I would be interest to know of the Ivy Cottage St Annes, Castletown, still stands today?
