If he was an army surgeon he should appear in officers' records at the National Archives, Kew, which are a lot easier to find than those of regular soldiers.
My gt gt gt uncle, also from Scotland, an army surgeon, retired to the IOM on half pay.
When I looked up the records years ago "Services of Officers on the Active List 1829-1919" (WO 25 & WO 76) included service details, date and place of birth, marriages and children.
The full pay return of 1829 (WO 25) gives the names and place and dates of birth and bapts of children, as an example. There are printed Army Lists (annually from 1702) in major public libraries to find their regiments.
