Re: 12th Regiment IOM 1840's
In Response To: 12th Regiment IOM 1840's ()

James Wadeson died in December 1841 at Mauritius, aged about 31 years, leaving a daughter (Catherine Henrietta Monk), who was born in Gibraltar in 1830, married and died on the IOM. James was indeed the Paymaster for the 12th foot, and to the best of my knowledge he did not "retire" to the Isle of Man. His last will & testament was dated 1836 at Mauritius, and proved at London in 1841. Catherine did not marry until 1851 long after the death of her father, and she is not entered in the IOM 1841 census, so I can only guess that she was still living on Gibraltar or ? at that time. She is visiting with John Qualtrough and family in Andreas in 1851; obviously staying with friends just shortly before her marriage to William John Monk. Where did you get your information that James Wadeson was living on the IOM in the 1840s?
