if they were on half pay then the Island looked attractive in that cost of living was less + expensive socialising escapable - alcohol was also considerably cheaper though duties were soon to be equalised with UK.
AFAIK the 12th Regt (presumeably you mean 12th (East Suffolk) Regiment of Foot) never stationed any small contigent on the Island.
