Manx Genealogy

Re: Patrick Cain

let me add a couple more points - as far as I can see none of the family eg in the applications for sons + daus of American Revolution mentioned any connection with the isle of Man - I understand that there was research done in 1950's re the Patk Cains connected with the State governance, again I understand done by a descendant - again no mention of a Manx link - as I pointed out to you the Adam Cain of Ballaugh was indicted for an agrarian riot and sentenced to spend time in the stocks, surely this would have been passed on by his son + grandson.
The link to the Island was first made by Frank Trowbridge which appears at the time the IGI indices to Manx bapts + marriages became readily available together with the films of the official copies of the registers - yes there was a Pat Cain baptised within the relevant time period to meet age at death of Pat senr and that Patk had a son Patk (not that this is surprised most Manx families have a child named after parents) - but he did not have access to land deeds nor it seems looked at any land records tho lib assed + lib vas were on film thus he went public with this new discovery tho I suspect did not get detailed checking done on Island. You, possibly with the help of James Cain, found the Ann Cain als Corlett will and because the names of some matched those of Adam and son Patk you decided it was Adams wife - as you have probably realised Parish records at this time are often incomplete (I'm sure Lois + others who have done much more detailed family reconstruction will confirm this) - from my studies of land transfers I was fairly confident that this could not be the case (wrong parish etc + nothing else fitted with what I knew already) + followed up the various lines - eventually I will put the summarised deeds online - but there is much more to do as well as looking at the mortgages.

We have been down the bible route before - some time ago you posted that it could not be found - but was it not known about 80 years ago as one of the signatories to the applications was already fairly old and surely was of a generation that would know of such things - as for older members of family uttering unknown words - Irish Gaelic introduced many words and expressions into my family - I presume from my gfa who just used them and then passed them on to his children
