there was no English garrison on Island (all troops were based at Castletown + had left 1896 - there was never any cavalry troops on Island - see www.manxnotebook.com/history/military/regts.htm) There hadn't been any troops in Douglas since c.1815 - the fort of Fort St referred to the civil way fort demolished 1818 - previously used as base for the Customs during first part of 18th C when known as Paul Bridson's parlour.
