Re: Claude (Claudius?) and Martha Gorry

Have you discovered the IOM census indexes, compiled by the late Brian Lawson ? They're invaluable in searching for entries on Ancestry etc.

They show that there was only one possible candidate for your Claudius Gorry, unless yours spent all his pre-marriage census nights off the island.

I've seen him in all the censuses up to and including 1901. In 1871 and 1881 he's with his parents and siblings in Peel (in 1871, Ancestry has him indexed as Claude Gorry age 4 , and in 1881 as Claudius Gorry age 14. In 1891, he's 23, on a fishing boat, and in 1901, he's still unmarried age 29, transcribed as Claudine Gorry, again on a fishing boat.) Looks as though he understated his age in 1901.

If you want help in using the census index numbers, just ask.
