Info recently recieved from Cumbria Archives research service confirms connection of James (labourer & later mariner) & Jane Callow of Hamilton Lane Whitehaven Cumberland & originally from IOM (1841 england census) most likely Lonan, married 28 Nov 1812, to the following 4 children all baptised Holy Trinity Whitehaven:
1. James bapt 8 July 1818; (married Ann Jackson, 5 June 1841 Holy Trinity Whitehaven St Bees Parish); died possibly at sea? between c 1848 & Mar 1851, when his wife is a widow on 1851 census;
2. William bapt 8 January 1821 (witness to James' wedding above; married 1845 Whitehaven, Elizabeth Crellin (born IOM-1851 census); may have died in USA

4.Thomas bapt 30 October 1825 (married Mary Pouder 1849 Whitehaven)
Additionally in Holy Trinity burial transcripts 1815-1837:
Ann Callow of Quay (Whitehaven) buried 18 May 1817 aged 2; not confirmed but likely to be the child bapt 22 Jan 1815 Lonan dau of James Callow & Jane Quine (Extracted IGI record); could explain the reuse of the name "Ann" in 1823
The archives located 2 newspaper articles that may be relevant to this family from Cumberland Pacqet Newspaper
1. James Callow pleaded guilty to stealing oak staves from a boat at Whitehaven & sentenced to 6 months in Carlisle Gaol-17 Jan 1826
2. Margaret Callow a passenger; resident or native of IOM drowned with all others when a storm sank the 'William Scott" near Whitehaven harbour; reports 21 October-6 Nov 1834. This same incident was reported in the Manx Advertiser 28 October 1834 (mentioned in IOMFHS magazine August 2009 p136; but there Margaret Callow is said to be "of Whitehaven"). It appears her body was never identifed, although 3 unidentifed women were washed ashore at Workington & Harrington near Whitehaven on 5th & 6th Nov 1834. Trying to establish if she is the Margaret Callow bapt 5 Sept 1813 Lonan IOM dau of James Callow & Jane Quine (Extracted IGI record).
Interested in comments on any of the above & can pass onto any interested researchers other Callow (Whitehaven) names located in the Archives' research but not at this stage thought to be directly related to this family.
