Re: Gelling Sayle Barque Ocean 1827

Hello, Averill,

I had just begun to work my way through the probate records of Cuyahoga County. It is pretty amazing how many Cuyahoga County records are available.

Here is the Paul Gelling probate entry:

Estate of Paul Gelling
Estate Files 1833-1836; Docket A, case no. 363

Know all men by these presents– that we John Sayle
William Waterson and William Kelley of Cuyahoga County
of Ohio, are held and firmly bound unto the state of
Ohio in the penal sum of Two hundred dollars lawful
money of the United States, to which payment will and truly
be made unto the said State of Ohio, we do bind
our heirs, Executors & Administrators, and every of
them jointly and severally, by these Presents. Sealed
with our seals and dated the twenty ninth day of October
Anno Domini, one thousand eight hundred and thirty three.
The condition of the above obligation is such
that if the above named John Sayle guardian for
Paul Gelling of the county and state aforesaid, minor
and orphan of Paul Gelling senr late of the
County and State aforesaid, shall faithfully account
with the Court of Common Please for the County of
Cuyahoga aforesaid, for the management of the property
and estate of the orphan under his care, and shall
deliver up the property and estate aforesaid, together
with the profits arising therefrom, to the order of said
court, or the direction of law, and shall in all respects
perform the duty of guardian to the said Paul Gelling
as the law requires; then the above obligation to be void,
otherwise to remain in full force and birtue in law–

Sealed and delivered in John Sayle

presence of us Wm Watterson

Danl Ratcliffe William Kelly

Jno C. Kennedy

To my mind, this pretty much confirms that Catherine Gelling nee Sayle was the daughter of John Sayle and Catherine Kinley, and that Paul Gelling was the son of John Gelling and Eleanor Gelling nee Sayle.

The John Sayle named as the guardian of Paul Gelling, Jr. was probably her brother, age about 24 in 1934.
William Watterson was probably the husband of Ann Sayle, Catherine’s sister.

William Kelly was perhaps the husband of Paul Gelling’s sister Margaret Gelling. (although there was another William Kelly/Kelley in Cuyahoga County during this time period) and I haven't found any evidence of William Kelly/Margaret Gelling or any of their children in US records so far

I would still like to find some evidence of the Gelling children, including the 'orphan" Paul, Jr.
