Sue, You may be interested to know that there was a workshop held by The Isle of Man Embroiderers' Guild On Saturday, 21st Jan 2011 to make bonnets in memory of the female convicts sent to Australia from the Isle of Man. Christina Henri, a conceptual artist from Tasmania was so struck by the fact that over 25,000 women from the British Isles and Ireland were transported, she set up a world-wide project to pay tribute to them. Using an original servants bonnet pattern she has been encouraging women to embroider a bonnet and contribute to a permanent exhibition in Tasmania. She toured the British Isles last year with the bonnets already completed. We contacted Hampton Creer, to ask his permission to use information we found in his book. Twenty ladies have started making bonnets and we expect to have more which we hope to show at the Royal Manx this year. There is an interesting web site email www.femalefactory.com.au The project is called.'Roses from the Heart' Anyone interested in being part of the project could contact me for further information, pattern etc. As we are already making bonnets for the Manx convicts names of other convicts can be downloaded from the above website.
