not sure where the 'tradition of the time' comes from - certainly in the 1841census reported ages + baptismal dates indicate most (ie well over 95%) were baptised within a a month or so of birth - late baptisms (usually not baptisms but receptions into the congregation) were noted as such - however certain more protestant members might have started to move away from the Catholic tradition of infant baptism.
