Re: John James Callister
In Response To: Re: John James Callister ()

Hi Sylvia/Sue

The PR marriage entry for John & Louisa reads as follows:

No: 32
When Married: Feb 8th 1872
Name and Surname: John Callister / Louisa Cain
Age: of full age (both)
Condition: Bachelor / Spinster
Rank or Profession: Mariner
Residence at the time of Marriage: Brackabroon (John) / Kew (Louisa)
Father's name and Surname: William Callister / John Cain
Rank or Profession of Father: Farmer / Farmer

So John's father was called Wm, he was a farmer, and Brackabroon/Brack-a-broom does neighbour Close Garey/Close-y-garey off the Poortown road.

Brack-a-broom is a farm - it still exists - so John was probably a tenant or lodger in a tenament cottage on the land. The 1881 Census return lists Louisa and family living in the same area - Brack-a-broom precedes Louisa's listing.

I would say the 1871 return does list John's RPO as Tailor - the word joiner appears at the top of the return, (?) Wattleworth, and it's clearly different from the word written next to John.

So on the face of things, Sylvia's suggestion of Wm & Amelia/Emily as John's parents seems all the more plausible. However, John's death certificate reads:

No: 74
When and Where Died: Fifteenth January 1922, 6 Walpole Avenue, Douglas
Name and Surname: John James Callister
Sex: Male
Age: 75 (Seventy five years)
Rank or Profession: Boading House Keeper and formerly a Harbour Commissioners Labourer
Cause of Death: (1.) Apoplexy (stroke): 6 months: Certified by Robt Marshall M.D.
Signature, Description and Residence of Informant: William Callister, Son, present at the death. Shop 6 Walpole Avenue, Douglas
When Registered: Sixteenth January 1922

So John must have been born 1846, or this official death certificate entry is incorrect.

The IOM Census returns list John's age:

1871: 24 - b. abt 1847
1881: 32 - b. abt 1849 - but John's fishing partner was John Gill, and the Gills did live at Brack-a-broom (see IOM 1871 Census)
1891: 40 - b. abt 1850 - but this is definitely John, Louisa & family
1901: 54 - b. abt 1847 - again, definitely John etc.
1911: 64 - b. abt 1847 - ditto, definitely John

Three of the above correlate the death certificate entry, and the 1851 & '61 Census returns (b. abt 1844) correlate the PR entry for Wm and Amelia/Emily's son:

No: 312
When Baptised: Dec 10th 1843
Child's Christian Name: John
Parents Name: Father: Wm Callister - Mother: Emily Crellin
Abode: Close Garey
Trade/Profession: Farmer

This entry is listed in the 1843 section of the German PR, so there's no typo. in the IGI transcript.

Problem...???
