Re: Douglas families - IOM
In Response To: Re: Douglas families - IOM ()

Hi Sue & David,

Thanks for responding to my post on the Douglas Families in the Isle of Man.

You could be right about Robert Jnr. being born about 1818, however unless I can find some other confirming details, I think I will get the family to obtain the death certificates for Robert who died in Sydney in 1895, and Mary who died in 1880. I have a newspaper article that confirmed the father of Mary McCaskie was indeed Charles Thomson McCaskie.

The family has said that Robert Snr. was a tailor on the IOM, and I have found a Photograph of the building which i understand was in James Street. In the 1837 Trade Directory, it showed a Robert Douglas as a Clothes Dealer in James Street, Douglas. Robert in Australia was also a tailor in Sydney.

There is also a Newspaper article confirming that the wife of Robert Snr. and mother of Robert Douglas in Australia died on 12 April 1864 in James Street aged 77 years, which has her born about 1787.

With regard to William Lamont Douglas, we will have to seek a death certificate for him also. I have found a NSW Death for William L in 1910 with father William & mother Susan. However I have just found in the Queensland bdm, a death of William Donald Douglas in 1950 with father William Lamont and mother Elizabeth with no maiden name, which could suggest that she was born overseas. Maybe he married twice as we know that he fathered Edwin who is the father of Arthur Lamont, the grandfather of our friend.

After talking with the family again today, they aren't as sure as before that he was born in IOM. Needs more investigation.

If you can find anything let me know, otherwise
I will post again once I find something.

Thanks again,

Peter
