Denise, one of the wills Len suggested you should see is for John Kneale in Michael buried Apl 17 1858. It is in BL's will index as: KNEALE, John 1858 Mic E 28 [LDS film no.] 0106459.
It is surprising how many people (usually the father or the grandmother) mentioned an illegitimate child in their wills, and this was often the only proof of the connection, unless they were recorded as a paternal grandchild in a census.
This is one I transcribed where we finally found a particular Charles Joughin:

A couple of other examples (from many) are John the son of Margaret Christian & Thomas Sayle bapt 26 July 1719 Andreas (under Christian in the IGI) who was in Thomas Sayle's 1723 will "to his illegitimate son John Sayle", and Thomas Kinread's Andreas decree in the same year records his illegitimate daughter Margaret. The fathers can be identified from other people mentioned in their wills/decrees, and Charles Joughin's mother was found to have died within a few months of his birth.
