I remember it well,what fascinated me in my early teens was the way the customers payment for items bought was put into a wooden two piece ball, and by way of a pulley system was sent up to the cashier.
Her job was to extract the money and send the change back by the same system.
No credit cards in those days!!!!
Guess there was sense in this method,only one person handling the money.
