Before Dissenters' Marriage Act 1849 [ ISLE of MAN ]
which acknowledged that there were many people
who objected to being married here in the established church [that is the Church of England] there
were no other legal marriages. The authorities knew however such marriages[ Methodist ,& Catholic ] did take place & in fact a clause in the previous Act 1757
made them legally valid , in other words a slip.
