Re: William Henry or Philip Quayle

Although your Quayle family may be related I haven't got that far back in my search. Philip Quayle, christened 12 July 1868, Lonan (was my great grandmother's brother.) I can follow my great grandmother (Elizabeth Jane) and her sister (Jessie) through to the 1901 census but cannot find a record for Philip in the Barrow in Furness census after 1881, the 1901 census is name indexed at our local records office and he does not appear in the index.

My great great granfather was William Henry Quayle, who appears in the 1851 census for Lezayre, son of John and Jane Quayle, one of 3 sons listed on the census, John (16) William H, (8) and Thomas H, (3) - other children may have followed I don't know!

William Henry married Ann Tomlinson (born Mosspor, Cheshire) 29 August 1863, Kirk Michael, they appear on the 1871 census for Lonan along with their 3 children Elizabeth J (5), philip (2) and Jessie (9 months).

I was told that the family had been farmers and had donated part of their land, along with land donated by their neighbour for a local school, which was built with money left in a local will. I was directed to the manx notebook on this site and found the details of the gift of land there. The school was Mountain, or Kelly's school, this ancestor was also a Philip Quayle (of Creggan) and his neighbour was William Kelly (of Corody) and the year was 1770.

From information my mother gave me I believe that William was killed and Ann left the Isle of Man and came to Barrow in Furness, on the 1881 census she is lodging in a house and she and the three children are employed at the Jute works (Jessie is only 10), by 1891 Ann owns or rents her own house and only Elizabeth Jane is at home (age 25), Ann has several lodgers. By 1901 Elizabeth Jane has married my great grandfather Richard Hayes (born Bury) who had been a lodger on the 1891 census. In 1901 Ann has moved and Elizabeth, Richard and their 4 children, Philip (my grandfather), Jane, Richard and Reuben, (another son William Quayle Hayes was born after 1901) are living with Ann, there are lodgers too.

I have found a William Quayle on Brian Lawsons burial index, dated 10 March 1872, aged 29, Lonan (this would fit in with what my mother told me.) I will have to apply for a death certificate to further my search.

I would be interested to know if anything above matches into your research, we could be looking at the same line.

Regards

Carol
