Re: question for eric gelling

Hello Mark. That should be "Elizabeth" Whalley on the 1881, which is hard to tell from the writing on the census.

Elizabeth GELLING married Thomas Richard WHALLEY in Dec quarter 1878 St. Peter Liverpool and I have 4 children: John 1879, Bishop 1880, Jessie 1886, Eleanor 1889. She died 1899 and he died 1912. Are we in sync so far?

I don't have Elizabeth's birth other than abt 1857-8 but her parents are John GELLIN(shoemaker) who married Mary Ann NICHOLSON 2 Jun 1856 Manchester Cathedral. Five children: Elizabeth ca 1858, Thomas 1860, Ann Jan 1862, William 1867, John 1870. I have John in all the census's. Email me at egelling at shaw dot ca if you'd like the details.

John is the son of Thomas GELLING and Elizabeth KELLY who married 16 Nov 1813 Braddan. John is with them at North John St, Douglas in 1841 age 17 as a shoemaker apprentice. John was bp 21 Jan 1824 St. Mathews Douglas to "John Gelling & Elizabeth Kelly" [s/b "Thomas", not "John"], 4th child and 3rd son. His next younger sister was Eleanor Jane Gelling b 1826 and she married Richard WHALLEY in 1850 at Castletown. They are Thomas Richard's parents. So, your two people in the 1878 marriage are first cousins.

I'm stumped at Thomas, who would be born ca 1785-90. There's a 4 Oct 1843 burial at Braddan for a Thomas Gelling age 53 who could be him, and a will that I haven't seen. The only Thomas within range on IGI is 15 Jan 1786 Marown son of Robert G & Jane Kelly, but we already know this child died early because he's not on either parent's will. The next nearest is a Thomas bp 14 Jul 1782 Patrick, son of John GELLING & Elinor SAYLE. I hadn't looked at this one before now, but it could be a possibility.
