The Richard Roney Family of Douglas

Richard Roney 1836-1916

From the Census returns between 1851 and 1901 It is unclear when and where Richard Roney was born. There are discrepancies between them. Ireland is shown more often than Douglas and the census return for 1891 is fairly specific so it is likely to be Killough Ireland.

1851 b: Abt 1837 Ireland
1861 b: Abt 1836 Ireland
1871 b: Abt 1841 Ireland
1881 b: Abt 1836 Douglas
1891 b: Abt 1836 Ireland Killough
1901 b: Abt 1831 Douglas

Killough, Cill Locha, in Irish, is a small village in Co Down, Northern Ireland, 5 miles south east of Downpatrick. It is notable for its sycamore-lined main street. The tower of an old windmill can be seen in the south of the village.

Little is known about the early years of Killough village but it is certain that by the 17th century it did have a pier and a regular market. It’s true development began between 1720 and 1740 when Judge Michael Ward set about expansion, developing local agriculture and industry, and to establish it as his estate village and port. It subsequently became one of the most important ports in Co Down.

Killough was used as an independent Irish Sea access to their adjacent estates. In the 1820s substantial further piers and wharves were built, and until the 1850s the harbour carried on a considerable trade, mostly grain exports and coal imports. As we will see the Roney family are linked to the coal industry.

In the 1851and 1861 census Richard is found living with his mother Mary. Richards farther is not shown and she is as widow so Richards farther died before 1851. Richards occupation in 1851 is unreadable. In 1861 his occupation is as a sailor so this is really the same as being classified as a mariner. The Census returns show that Richard was a Mariner/Sailor except the return of 1891 where he is shown as a Quay porter. His occupation his whole life seems to have been working with ships. The ship that Richards son (Hugh) was serving on was SS Sarah Blanch on which he met his demise, was a collier (coal carrier). In 1891 Richard is shown as a quay porter also. it may be that he was, at this time taking the coal off the ships and loading them on the quay.

Richard Married Susannah McAdam in Braddan on the 15th September 1861 the IGI shows:
IGI: Marriages: Spouse: SUSANH. MC ADAM Marriage: 15 SEP 1861 Braddan, Isle of Man
Richard Roney and Susannah McAdam had the following children:

Eliza b: Abt 1863 1871/1881 census

The Isle of Man Burial Register has an entry for a Richard Roney buried in Braddan aged 78 on the 6th November 1916: RONEY, Richard 78 Bra 6 Nov 1916. The age at the time of this Richards death would suggest that he was born in 1836 which supports the two dates of birth from the 1881 and 1891 census. The monumental inscription for this grave states: (Braddan New Burial Ground Section One Block 4 #2489)
