Was he married to Ann after June 1837 in England or Wales? And, if so, have you looked for their marriage cert which should have both their fathers' names and occupations? You need her surname, for a start. If you don't have this start with their child or children's birth certificates. If you don't have dates to be able to order these then start with a birth you do know - your grandparents? - then their parents' marriage cert., etc., going back one generation at a time, using the information from each cert to take you one step further back. Censuses help confirm the steps, but you need to have the certificates to be certain you are correct.
