Re: ISOLA RESTAURANT
In Response To: ISOLA RESTAURANT ()

THis house was built between 1730 and 1750 on the very edge of the town. It was built by the Stephen family of Douglas, probably for letting to stranger-merchants who came to live in Douglas.
It passed down directly in that family until 1825 when Elixabeth Stephen of Liverpool sold this and the adjoining house in Church St. to (probably a relation) Ann Lloyde, also of |Liverpool. Finally in 1844 she and her husband Wm of Liverpool sold the two houses separately; 7 John Street was sold to Capt. Thomas Kneale, Mariner of Douglas, for £270.
By will of 1848 Thomas left the property to his widow Margaret. THe property was the subject of a marriage settlement in 1852 on Margaret's (2nd) marriage to J. Bridson.
The following had interests under the marriage settlement:
Thomas Michael Kneale
William Maud & Charlotte his wife
Thomas Kneale & wife.
In April 1898 the Kneases sold the premises to John Savage of the Victoria Tavern. He also acquired 5 John Street and they were then merged. In 1920 Savage's will trustees sold to Gelling's Foundry Ltd.

This doesn't include the identity of tenants, they may be referred to if the original deeds were all examined.
