Manx Notebook has the answers the first was an orphanage or home for children whose families were unable to care for them. House of Industry was a refuge
for the sick & very poor organised by a charity begun
by a C of E vicar from St Barnabas. Interestingly I visit
it regularly the much modernised buiding & large garden is a quite luxurious Care Home for elderly folk
& regarded as the very best around. As clients pay fees
there is apparently no anxiety about poor house origins.
