from the late 1690's to 1765 the running trade (smuggling as viewed by London) was the main trade of the Island (see www.manxnotebook.com/catalog/b166.htm) - many non-Manx merchants setup business usually in Douglas to join in - if they died on the Island then their will was usually very informative as normally there would be a detailed cout case by partners attempting to recover debts - the books on Manx smuggling by Frances Wilkins cover much of this - however unless they married or had children then the only other records naming them will be the ingates + outgates (receipts for customs duties) which are not filmed.
